Lib Dems Propose Motion to Protect Welwyn Hatfield
At Full council last week, the Liberal Democrat group were very pleased to see a motion put forward by Lib Dem Cllr Tony Skottowe for the Council to look at reviewing the Town and Parish councils in Welwyn Hatfield Borough, was passed unanimously by all three political groups.
The review would look at the current Parish and town council make up in Welwyn Hatfield and can also recommend new town or parish councils are set up. A new Town Council for Welwyn Garden City would be one of the key recommendations.
This is happening against the backdrop of a major shakeup of Local government by the Labour Government in Westminster and the proposed replacement of Borough and County Councils by Unitary Councils. These new Councils will be larger and almost inevitably more remote than the current borough council so having Town and Parish councils manage at least some of the decisions closer to home will help retain some vital local influence.
Cllr Tony Skottowe saysm ”I have lived in Welwyn Garden City since 1973 and over the past 52 years have done my best to promote and protect the town I love. Setting up a Town Council in Welwyn Garden City and keeping decisions about the town local, just as already happens in Hatfield and the other local parishes, is incredibly important to me.”
