On May 1st, vote for a Real Alternative by voting Liberal DemocratLabour has let us down time and time again: the Hatfield Hospital, all those extra houses, stealth taxes on rail fares, a doubling of the income tax rate for the lower paid from 10p to 20p, and on Iraq. Our deputy leader Vince Cable was spot on when he described Gordon Brown's descent from Stalin to Mr Bean. In Welwyn Hatfield, however, the party in power is the Conservatives. At Town Council, at Borough Council and at County Council. And we think they are getting it wrong time and time again. They are wrong to put a waste site at New Barnfield - next to a special needs school - when a much better option exists at Roe Hyde, next to the motorway and already an industrial site. They are wrong to exclude a swimming pool from the master plan for the Broadwater Road development in WGC. They are wrong to demoralise the council workforce by pushing through ill-thought out schemes to privatise wherever possible - which will cost more money, not less. And result in worse services. And they were wrong to connive with Three Valleys Water in putting a pumping station yards from residents' houses without as much as a murmur in advance. We will continue ensure the Tory council get the message on all of these issues and will also tackle the county council on the state of the roads, the importance of the environment, and making sure we get the best possible health services in Welwyn Hatfield. Our three borough councillors - Nigel Quinton, Tony Skottowe and Hazel Laming - have worked as hard as any on the council, and have provided a lively and intelligent - hopefully constructive - opposition. They have certainly been more effective than their Labour counterparts and have shown what can be achieved by positive campaigning. The Liberal Democrats provide a REAL and truly green alternative to the NewToryLabour establishment - make sure your vote is a vote for change.
