Welwyn Hatfield's roads are a little bit safer today thanks to the Liberal Democrats.

The Lib Dems have managed to get action to make Dixon's Hill Road, a notorious local accident blackspot in Welham Green, a safer place for pedestrians and motorists.

At the Joint Members Panel last Thursday, 22nd October, Councillors from both Welwyn Hatfield and Hertfordshire councils heard from Steve Dibben, Herts Highways District Manager. Steve explained the investigations following the Lib Dem petition presented in April 2009. Some of the necessary minor works identified following the petition had already been completed and the others would be undertaken very soon.

Steve confirmed that speeding was a major issue on the road and that accident levels were such that more significant action was needed. Work by Herts Highways on developing a permanent solution to the problems identified by the petition are ongoing and will be reported to a future meeting of the Joint Members Panel.

Prospective Lib Dem MP Paul Zukowskyj, who attended the meeting to hear the outcome of the petition he and local campaigner Simon Archer organised, commented 'This is a fantastic result for the residents of Welham Green. For too long they have had to take their life in their hands to get onto Dixon's Hill Road from their streets. Hopefully when Herts Highways sort out the speeding problem, they'll feel less like they're playing Russian Roulette every time they drive out of their road.

'Perhaps a question residents should be asking is with three recently re-elected Conservative councillors, why did it take a petition organised by the Lib Dems to get action?'
