Hatfield Town Centre needs more than a revamp11.08.22pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 29th Sep 2008
"Q. What does a Zimbabwe dollar bill and a promise from our Conservative Borough Council have in common? A. Neither is worth the paper they're written on. Our council have promised us and promised us a town centre. Construction was to start this year. Then on election day we suddenly find the developers have got cold feet. First it's a short delay, a few months, then at least two years, and now an ultimatum from the developers that construction won't start for at least FIVE YEARS and they want taxpayers to pay them £12 million so they can be sure of a profit. Clearly the developers have decided they don't want to redevelop Hatfield. They presented the council with an ultimatum that the council simply could not agree to. How can they get away with this? Because your council negotiated a contract with so many holes in it, St Modwen were in total control right from the start. John Dean and his council cronies simply decided to hand over everything to St Modwen. John Dean and the Conservative council leadership are WHOLLY responsible for this utter disaster for Hatfield. They were the driving force which wasted so much money and time and which has condemned the residents of Hatfield to live with a decaying ghetto as a town centre for years to come."
