Tax cuts, and a billion back from Brussels?10.44.20pm BST (GMT +0100) Sat 27th Sep 2008
There is some good news from Brussels. Says Peter Welch: "The Common Agricultural Policy is going to cost a billion euros less than planned this year. This follows reforms, which have cut surpluses. "The butter mountains of the past are long gone, and the EU has needed to spend virtually nothing on the controversial export refunds (which support sales of food outside Europe). "Liberal Democrats want these savings to be made permanent - and bigger reforms of the Agricultural Policy too. But the first question is what to do with this year's savings." Welwyn Hatfield LibDem parliamentary candidate Paul Zukowskyj (left) with Euro candidate Peter Welch. Says Paul: "The Lib Democrats are the only one of the three major parties to support cutting tax this year. So that's like putting money back in the pockets of ordinary people."
