Dingy road to Peartree: action promised

Network Rail have promised improvements to the rail footbridge from Hyde Way to the Howard Centre in WGC, following a campaign by Liberal Democrat county councillor for Handside and Peartree Malcolm Cowan.

'I know from my postbag how disliked the current state of the bridge is, particularly at night' he said.

An independent report commissioned by Herts County Council into transport issues in WGC said 'The condition of the bridge is poor in terms of lighting and maintenance. It is a long structure with no intermediate access points. This adds to personal security fears and the enforced narrowing of the bridge makes for an uncomfortable prospect. It is crucial that dialogue with Network Rail takes place given its responsibility for the structure.'

Malcolm says 'I am pleased to say that following letters from the Chief Executive of Herts County council, at my request, Network Rail have promised improvements. In their letter back, they say 'I have arranged for the lighting to be checked and repaired. I have also arranged for an assessment to be undertaken regarding the possible replacement of the lighting.'

It also says that they are looking to prop the footbridge from underneath so that the 'buildouts' (the barriers reducing the width) can be removed.'

This is excellent news' said Malcolm. 'I shall be pressing to ensure the work is carried out as quickly as possible, so the bridge can become an asset to the town once more. I congratulate Network Rail on reacting positively to the issues raised.'
