Local Liberal Democrats have heavily criticised the large rail fare increases just announced.
Spokesperson County Councillor Malcolm Cowan said 'Increases of at least 3% above inflation just cannot be justified. Most commuters and rail users are seeing very small pay increases; if council tax can be frozen, then why not rail fares? They are a larger element in the budgets of many local families.
In the longer term, Liberal Democrats look to reduce fares, so they are nearer the levels of most other countries. Much of the cost arise from all the separate elements that arose from the botched rail privatisation - train operating companies, rolling stock companies, Network Rail, and all the lawyers, accountants bean counters and clock watchers who are there just to make sure each company does not get ripped off by another rail company. Not to mention the profits going out to all the companies involved.'
Instead they should be forced to work together to expand the rail network and gat fares down.
