The borough of Welwyn Hatfield has been awarded Fairtrade status after a long campaign by Fairtrade activists. Welwyn Hatfield Fairtrade Group has fought to increase public awareness of the movement, and make Fairtrade products available in the borough.
The group's efforts have now been acknowledged with 'Fairtrade Borough' status.
Local activist, Nigel Quinton is delighted by the announcement. Nigel, pictured second from left, said: "I was very glad to support the Fairtrade Group whilst I was serving as a councillor in Handside ward, and helped in part to persuade the council to add their support and commitment to the movement. I very much hope that this is seen as a beginning not an end, and that more local firms and retailers can be brought on board, giving local people the maximum opportunity to make ethical choices in their shopping baskets."
The Fairtrade movement works to ensure that producers in developing countries receive a fair price for their goods. If somebody buys a bar of Fairtrade chocolate, roughly double the amount goes back to the producer than it would if it was non-Fairtrade chocolate.
Welwyn Hatfield Fairtrade Group currently has 10 members, but is always on the lookout for volunteers.
