EXCESSIVE CHARGES "BURIED" - Let the matter rest in peace

Cemetery charges now in line with inflation.

Liberal Democrat leader Cllr.Tony Skottowe declared himself "well pleased" after last week's Cabinet meeting to fix the Council's Budget. When the 40% and more proposed increase in burial charges came to light at a Resources Committee meeting Cllr. Skottowe suggested that they be referred back to Cabinet with a request to bring them back in line with inflation. "Happily all my fellow councillors on the committee agreed, regardless of which party they represented." The result was that the Cabinet agreed to cut the charges back as asked. "It was a small victory for the residents admittedly", he said, "but the increases that were being proposed on cemetery and burial charges were quite out of proportion.

"We frequently disagree with both the other parties", Tony said, "but just occasionally something comes up that all the parties can support and put right. I'm just pleased that I happened to spot the excessive increase being proposed on residents suffering bereavement."
