£40 a bin!

Local activist Paul Zukowskyj stands ready with his £40 in case his bin is mislaid

The Local Tory Council are privatising council services, promising cost savings and improved services - what they mean is improved services if you pay more!

The Liberal Democrats have learnt that SERCO, the private 'for profit' company the council has engaged to collect domestic refuse and garden waste, want to charge Welwyn Hatfield residents £40 if their brown bin goes missing, despite the bin costing less than £18!

More Tory Lies...

The council are adamant that privatising council services will save us all money, but the truth is the quality of service will deteriorate. SERCO and other companies are there to make money, and to do that, they'll squeeze every penny they can out of residents. The 'brown bin' charge is just the tip of the iceberg.

What next?...

The council plans to privatise the council telephone contact service, maybe we should expect a premium rate phone line?

What we think...

Liberal Democrats believe that council services should be there for the good of the residents, not to line the pockets of fat-cat private companies. Your local Liberal Democrat councillors and activists stand ready to fight against the councils plans to sell off your council to the highest bidder. Help us to stop the Tories in their tracks!

What we are doing...

Your LibDem councillors have called in the decision to proceed with privatising council tax and benefits sections and Labour have supported this initiative. Cllr Nigel Quinton attended and spoke at Unison's protest outside council offices (below) and promised that the LibDems would fight for the maintenance of public service.
